Fall is so beautiful that I find myself waking up earlier. I sit on the deck to watch the sun come up. With a cup of tea in my hand, I wait.

My view of the river is cradled by white pines and billowing oaks.

I hear the herons long before I see them. As the sun crawls into the sky, they shatter the silence. Flying parallel on opposite sides of the river, they squawk loudly. They come together, there is a noisy dance, and one flies out of view.

The winner of the duel lands in front of me. He shakes off his long feathers and peacefully settles into his sunbath. I watch as the mist dances off the water, swirling around him.

Peace in the Valley again.
